Introduction
Health without Borders is a subject that is significant in introducing learners to the concepts or principles of health. The concepts of health define the actual condition of complete social, mental and physical well-being. Mere absence of infirmity and disease cannot be used as the basis for describing health (WHO-19480. The initiative of Health without Borders is aimed at ensuring that university students from diverse disciplines and departments join ideas on a shared interest in analysing and understanding the impacts of health on human population. Human acts are able to affect the health of an individual or a group of people. Therefore, it is the duty of the responsible authority to examine how international health varies with the health burdens and health status on a nation or community. Students have to be conversant with the aspects of health without borders by carefully analysing how contemporary issues, global history, among other factors, are interrelated.
Innovation and emerging technologies are also some of the most important issues to be handles to ensure that global health is perfected. Innovative ideas should be structured such that they are in line with the needs of a nation or community that is undergoing a shortage in healthcare provision. Technologies that are emerging should also be relevant to the needs of a nation or the community that needs care. Therefore, an effective technological instrument or an innovative idea will depend on the problems that it is able to solve in addition to how reliable it will be in dealing with the issue at hand. Different co-curricular activities are able to enhance understanding the strategies that may be incorporated in the effective execution of a successful global health initiative.
Activity 1: You Tube session on the importance of global health
Activity 1 involved watching a You Tube video that touched on the issue of global health, and how mobile devices can be used to enhance evidence and innovations. The video is available online at  HYPERLINK "/watch?v=UIeEJZwgDbI" /watch?v=UIeEJZwgDbI. Mobile Health Online Course, hosted by Alain B. Labrique, possesses all the rights to this video. I relied on my computer and the internet connection to enable me to listen to the issues that were being raised in this video and how they could be solved successfully.
Since this activity involved watching a video, the total amount of time that I took depended on the length of the You Tube video. The video that is entitled “Global mHealth: An Overview of Mobile Innovations and Evidence” is 25 minutes and 23 seconds long. The length of this video has been adequate since it has allowed the speaker to explain how mobile devices have been crucial in supporting innovations in health care. All the important points that are crucial in understanding the concepts that he speaker is trying to convey have been covered within these 25 minutes.
The speaker in this video is referred to as Alain B. Labrique. DR. Labrique is an associate professor in the department of International Health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Dr. Labrique has tackled the topic dealing with how mobile technologies can be used to support global health innovations and sustainability. In the video, he talks about the processes that a newly introduced technology has to undergo in order to be considered as viable in the field of global health. For example, he uses “The Gartner Hype Cycle’ to explain the value, usefulness, reliability, accuracy, and validity of the technology that has been newly introduced in defining the steps that can be employed to effectively promote a sustainable global health.
In this video, the speaker has clearly stated that new technologies and innovations have come up with solutions that are characterized by high expectations and hypes that cannot be realized in real sense. This is because the technologies that are coming up cannot be applied in the mainstream health care systems. The goal of a productive global health system is to come up with a technology that can produce the desired results. The technologies that have the capacity to produce the required results have to posses qualities such as validity, accuracy, reliability, usefulness, and value. In addition, I have also come to understand that an efficient system of mobile health should be aimed at ensuring that the principle of 5 C’s are catered for. These may include: (1) creation of opportunities to help in improving health; (2) compression of time; (3) connecting individuals; (4) counting events; and (5) collecting data. The five principles can be used to harness ubiquitous communication and information technology so as to foster a sustainable global health.
Activity 2: Fundraising initiative to create awareness on the importance of global health
In this activity, I attended a fundraising event that was aimed at collecting funds that would be directed to the kitty set aside by the institution to enable the other students and the surrounding community to access materials that dwell on the global health. The event took place at the University’s Amphitheatre because it was indicted that this venue could accommodate a large group of students who were interested in understanding the impacts and importance of global health.
For the fundraising, the total amount of time that was taken was 4 hours. The first one hour was used for ensuring that everything that was needed for the fundraiser was at place. Within this period, the guest of honour and other principles guests had the opportunity of arriving and confirming with the event organizer on how the schedule will be executed. The second hour was used for allowing the public to make their contributions while letting those who felt the greatest concern, as per their contributions, to state their concerns about the issue of global health and its impacts. The third and fourth hours were left for the guests of honours to make their contributions while giving speeches on the importance of health without borders and how it can be achieved.
The guest of honour, who was also the main speaker for this fundraiser, was the WHO’s advisor of Human Resource Policies and Health Systems. The WHO’s representative was vital for this event because he was able to explain the global views on health and how it impacted people’s lives. The experience of the speaker, having worked in a number of countries, helped the attendees to grasp the facts that were involved in promoting a sustainable global health.
The topic that the speaker dwelt on was on how global health could be supported by encouraging non-governmental organizations or other support groups to find ways of collecting funds that will help in spreading the message on the importance of global health.
In this activity, I have come to realize that initiatives that are aimed at solving the problems of health needs to be supported by coming up with programs that take care of funds. Without proper funding of global health initiatives, the desired goals and visions will not be realized. I have also realized that coming up with programs such as fundraisers are able to educate the community on embracing the idea of ensuring that global health is accepted and practiced at every tier of the society.
