The main objective of this report is to evaluate a diet / weight loss plan described in a book basing the assessment on the sound plans and recommendation stipulated in the discourse. The study shall provide its analysis based on characteristics of fad diets. It shall also evaluate the strength and weakness of the book’s approach, violation of safe weight loss principles, and faddish tendencies. From the list provided, the discussion of this report shall be grounded on ‘Skinny Rules’, a book put forward by Bob Harper.
The Skinny Rules: The Simple, Nonnegotiable Principles for Getting to Thin
This book has been put forward by Bob Harper who is known as a celebrity personal trainer as well as a star in ‘Biggest Losers Never Break’ program. This book that mainly focuses on diet aimed to cut through the contradicting weight loss information that is prevalent among people causing more misperceptions than providing results. Generally, the author of this discourse used his knowledge on nutrition and his vast weight loss strategy to provide twenty core principles of losing weight. These principles are what forms the basis of the skinny rules stipulated in the book (Harper 33). According to the author, these rules shall assist people to break their dependence on processed foods and decrease people’s cravings for salty and overly sweet foods.
The rules specified in this book include
Drinking water from a large glass before all the meals. No excuses.
Do not drink calories.
Reduce the intake of grains and refined flours.
Consume 30-50 grams of fiber on a daily basis.
Eat berries and apples on a daily basis.
Do not consume carbs after lunch.
Read labels of food products to know ingredients being ingested.
Stop estimating about the food size portions being consumed and get it right.
Avoid sweeteners including artificial ones.
Avoid the consumption of white potatoes.
Make at least one day of the week meatless.
Get rid of fried food and fast foods.
Eat a well-balanced diet breakfast.
Cook at least ten meals of the food consumed in a week.
Eject high salt foods.
Eat vegetables.
Have adequate sleep.
Go to bed hungry.
Plan one binge meal in a week.
Consume proteins in every meal.
In addition to the skinny rules provided, Bob Harper provides his readers with one month’s menu plans comprised of several recipes that can be included for breakfast, dinner, lunch and snacks. Some strength of this book is that it provides people with actual meal plans that can be used. Additionally, the rules and recommendations provided are not only straight forward but also practical. Moreover, being a certified personal trainer himself, the author is well positioned to provide people with sound advice. Similarly, this book is filled with tons of healthy recipes and advice that has been road tasted. Furthermore, readers of this book can ascertain the feasibility of the rules stipulated in this book through watching the ‘The Biggest Losers’ program which also uses similar principles to attain desirable weight less among contestants.
Although the book provides information that is insightful, some of the plans, strategies and recommendation provided is false while others comprised of faddish attributes. For instance, one of the incorrect principles provided by Bob Harper is that he recommends people to go to sleep hungry. This principle is unsafe since the body is deprived of nutrients and adequate sleep for healthy metabolism. Furthermore, it also has a potential of increasing the body weight since the body perceives ‘starvation’ and retains all foods and nutrients consumed in the nigh future.
