African Americans history and culture
Throughout my study in this course, I have always found fascinating ideas and aspect. These ideas have influence my perception and understanding of the African-American people and culture. In my younger years I could not understand why the media and the society portrayed the African American community in a rather negative animosity. This course has broadened my knowledge, understanding and attitude towards black African Americans. Characteristics and behavioral aspects that define African Americans can be traced and attributed to their history and culture.
History on African Americans, explains and portrays the reasons behind the aspects that today’s define and describe an African American individual or his or her culture. Black African Americans have a deep and bitter past. Their history begins in the slave trade era. Their fore fathers were captured, kidnapped and abducted from their native African home and brought to America as slaves. However, despite their hardships and disgusting lives as slaves, African Americans were determined to preserve and uphold their African culture. Africans have a wide range of beliefs and cultural proceedings. African slave and pioneers of slavery used art and music to preserve and pass cultural practices and beliefs to subsequent generations. African slaves were not allowed to access and have formal education. This made the survival of their culture even more difficult. However, art such as music, drawings and language played a great role in supporting, preserving and nurturing African culture among Africans in America. Having learnt this history about origin and settlement of black African Americans, I was able to comfortably derive activities, circumstances and occurrences that took place in history, that are responsible for the aspects and characteristics that define black African Americans today (Congress).
African Americans experience and suffer from mega racism. The aspect of racism is experienced by both older and young African Americans and in every aspects of their lives. Racism in Americans is so severe that even the media feel justified and correct to display it (Congress). African Americans are diminished and even barred from accessing some utilities due to their race. Black African-American race is portrayed and viewed as an inferior race. From my understanding of this course, Racism ideologies are as a result of the manner in which slaves were treated. Slaves were viewed as an inferior species and hence they were diminished and treated badly. They were used in carrying out difficult manual tasks since their white bosses thought they could not comprehend white collar job (Congress). The aspect of racism is historical and America and the world at large need to address and create a solution.
African Americans are in most instances defined by their language and accent. They possess a unique language accent that greatly differs from fluent English spoken by white people. African Americans often include slang and African names in their speech. History on Americans of African descent address this aspect as an outcome of white superiority complex (Carson, Lapsansky-Werner and Nash 13). The white slave traders and owners barred slaves from accessing formal education. The main reason behind this act was due to the fear of enlightening them. They feared that if the slaves, whose majority were of African origin, were educated and enlightened, they would lead a revolution against their owners (Carson, Lapsansky-Werner and Nash 13).
This mean act of denying black people basic education lead to the adaptation and preservation of African accent...
