A person’s worth or dignity is in most cases viewed through the lens of their social standing in the society. People worldwide have relentlessly strived to improve their general status in society. In the United States, the libertarian ideals have made it possible for people from all racial and ethnic categories to pursue the maximum happiness in life through equal opportunities in access to education, employment, justice among others. Despite being the largest democracy in the world, India’s egalitarian pursuit has been compromised by its controversial caste system that has been an important part of the country’s history and traditions. In the Western world, individual merit is determined by one’s personality and not social classification. India has a history that spans centuries ago with the country’s main religion Hinduism occupying a centerpiece role in society. Despite being home to a number of different people with various dialects, the country’s social classification has enabled them all to find a place and contribute to society in the past. The Indian caste system is a race-based social stratification that identifies individuals in society into four major categories and is based on Hindu dogma.
