Neo-Slavery and Human Rights
When you encounter the term slavery, you are likely to reflect on the images of transatlantic ships and shackles which seem firmly relegated to the past. However, there are many people enslaved today compared to any other time in the history of the world. It is estimated that over 13 million slaves were captured and sold between the 15th and 19th centuries. Today, over 40 million people are living in one or another form of neo-slavery (Crane, 97). This figure is more than three times what was witnessed during the transatlantic slave trade according to the latest statistics from the Walk Free Foundation and ILO. Of these figures, girls and women comprise 71% of today’s slavery victims while children account for 25%. This equals to 10 million slaves worldwide. Slavery has not been fully eradicated from our society despite numerous efforts from the United Nations Council and other human rights groups.
