What was distinctive about Gandhi's nationalism? Why was it so effective in the Indian context?
Nationalism is the perception that the members of a particular nation share a common interest that differs from other nations. Members or groups who are bound by the nationalism spirit are easily identified by their social, economic, historical and cultural backgrounds. The spirit of nationalism nurtures loyalty and devotion in promoting a nation culture and interests as opposed to others (August 21st, 2016). One of the Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1915 f, returned to India from and used non-violence method spearheaded by nationalism to empower people who later on fought for Independence to liberate themselves from the British empire.
Gandhi stayed in South Africa for two decades, went as a lawyer and later on became a leader of the Indian community. The Indians immigrants and Africans were discriminated by the British empire, something that challenged, harmony between religions, end discrimination of low class and women was essential. The Indian Spiritual and political leader believed that Indians who are Muslims and Hindus should work as a team irrespective of their religion to liberate themselves from the British rule. His initiative was to have an Indian nationalism that all people will benefit and not the first class and reject nationalism where only a few elite groups such as lawyers, doctors and landlords benefit.
What aspects of Indian society have changed most substantially in the 20th century compared to more traditional patterns?
In the traditional society, women were discriminated and relegated to household jobs, while male-dominated all aspects, leading to high level of illiteracy thus failing to compete effectively and married at a tender age, but a lot has changed in the current century. “Women, who now represent 48.2% of the population, are getting access to education, and then employment. From 5.4 million girls enrolled at the primary level in 1950-51 to 61.1 million girls in 2004-05. At the upper primary level, increased from 0.5 million girls to 22.7 million girls.” March 11, 2012. The economy of India has grown from the tradition of rural and local self-sufficient to an international with modern technology that has now promoted a mutual relationship between local residents, leaders as they connect with people globally.
