The Capture of Fort Ticonderoga
The battle of Fort Ticonderoga forms one of the major clashes in American Revolution history. It is also referred to as the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga. Ticonderoga was located on the shore of Lake Champlain in New York. The capture of Fort Ticonderoga took place in May 1775 when Allan and Captain Benedict Arnold guided the Green Mountain Boys of Vermont to raid the Fort. During the attack, few British troops were at the Fort. The mountain boys attacked the Fort while the British soldiers were asleep. The Americans stormed and captured the Fort at dawn without firing a single shot. They captured 78 pieces of artillery including 59 cannons. Later, they took the cannons to Boston, where they played a crucial part in chasing the British out of Boston (Tonsetic, 33).
The capture of the Fort occurred in a structured manner. By 11.30 pm on May 9, the men had gathered at Hand’s Cove, which is currently called the Shoreham Vermont. They were ready to cross Lake Champlain to Ticonderoga. However, the boats arrived late at 1.30 am, and they were not enough to carry the whole troop. Eighty-three Green Mountain Boys crossed first together with Arnold and Allen while Donald went back to pick the rest. As the dawn neared, Allen and Arnold feared to lose the element of the surprise, and they decided to attack the Fort with the 83 men at hand. There was only one guard on the south gate, and he fled after his musket misfired, letting the Americans enter the Fort. The Patriots roused the sleeping soldiers at gunpoint and started seizing their weapons. Allen, Arnold and some other men took the stairs towards the officer’s quarters (Smith, 120).
