Iran’s Involvement in Sponsoring Global Terrorism


It is not in doubt that Iran has a longstanding relationship with terrorism. The country is a victim but also considered to be sponsoring terrorist activities in many parts of the world. Iran has been adversely mentioned in supporting terrorist activities across the globe (Malakoutikhah 1). Many countries have accused Iran of providing weapons of mass destruction and a safe haven for terrorist groups that include Hamas and Hezbollah. The views of Iran regarding such groups contrast with other countries’. For instance, Iran regards them as national liberation movements whereas other countries including the United States view them as terrorist groups. This paper analyzes Iran’s involvement in sponsoring global terrorism.
One prominent aspect that stands out vividly to link Iran to supporting and sponsoring global terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah is its involvement in militant activities in Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon (Malakoutikhah 1). Iran has justified its support for these groups because it holds the views that they are national liberation movements. It equally defends its close ties with these outlawed groups on the pretext that they are justified in defending themselves against Israeli forces. This has caused it to be singled out as a nation that sponsors terrorism activities.


Iran has close ties with Al Qaeda despite making it public that Al Qaeda is a group engaged in terrorist activities. The country provides Al Qaeda officials with a safe haven (Malakoutikhah 5). One reason why Iran is alleged to be supporting and funding terrorist groups is the training assistance it offered to Al Qaeda in the 1990s and how it facilitated the group’s entry into Afghanistan. Elsewhere, through Tehran, Iran has aggressively expanded its support base and sympathizers in Latin America. It has built a network of mosques and radicalized thousands of Latin Americans (Ottolenghi). Furthermore, the nation has helped Hezbollah dominate the expatriates in the region.
