The Pioneers of Oil Painting in the 14th and 15th Century Flanders
In the 14th century, the material of choice for most painters was egg tempera. Some texts suggest that oil paints were used by artists as early as the 8th century, but they only became widely used in the early 15th century (Kleiner 234). Recent evidence suggests that oil paints had been in use for a while, and Melchior Broederlam may have used oils in the late 14th century (Kleiner 219). However, Robert Campin and Jan Van Eyck were the first to use oil in their paintings extensively in the 15th century Flanders.
