Spanish Texas and Texas Revolution
This course has played an essential role in my understanding of Spanish colonial in Texas. I also understood how Texas gained its independence and the various wars that were fought before independence. Texas colonization by the Spanish started as a mission to spread Christianity and to take over the region. They aimed to spread their culture and Christianity to the natives living in the area. As a result, there was an increased Spaniard settlement in the state as they explored and evaluated Texas people, land, and resources. The friendly relations between the natives and the Spanish were short-lived. This is because the natives began distrusting the settlers since they disrupted their lives and brought diseases. Throughout the 1700s and early 1800s, the Spaniards in Texas protected the wealth from rival Europeans and the independent Indian community. As such, this led to a series of events that caused the Texas revolution.
In this course, we should remember the Texas Revolution, which was fought between Texas colonists and Mexico. The Texas Revolution has also been referred to as the war of Texas Independence. The war was fought between October 1835 to April 1836, leading to the Republic of Texas's foundation (Hardin 23). After the Revolution in 1836, two treaties were signed that led to the Republic of Texas's establishment. The first treaty was concerned with public terms that declared that the war was over. It also ordered all prisoners' release and the captured property's returned, among other terms. In the same year, the second treaty was signed, which specified private terms such as the release of Santa Anna, recognition of Texas independence, and Texas borders. After the treaties, a new constitution was drafted to give citizens right, legalized slavery, and specified the president's terms of office. Based on the people and events leading to the Texas Revolution, I understand that there are always at least two sides to every story and that the point of view depends on past experiences and interests.
One of the topics that I understand in detail is the early statehood of Texas. The Republic of Texas held elections the same year after the Revolution. On October 22, 1836, Texans elected Sam Houston as the first president of the state. He focused on reducing debts and making peace with the Indians. During his first term as the president, he held several peace negotiations conferences with the Indian leaders to establish new trust. He was, however, unable to maintain peace between the Indians and Whites. This led to several conflicts in the state because many Texas was not patient to wait for Houston policies to work and demanded the removal of Indians in the state (Texas State Library N.p). In 1838 Mirabeau Lamar was elected the second president after Houston term ended. Lamar had a different attitude towards the Indians than Houston. He believed that the whites could not co-exist with the Indians since they lack integrity. Congress supported Lamar's view of permanently getting rid of Indians in Texas.
