The American Civil War
The American Civil War took place between 1861-1865, and it involved the Northern states (Union) and the Southern states (Confederates) that had seceded from the Union. The war was primarily due to longstanding friction over slavery. The war presented an opportunity to restore a nation torn apart by slavery by uniting all states and ensuring that the country could move forward peacefully.
The secession of a number of the Southern States that ultimately led to the Civil War was brought about by several controversial issues. Firstly, members of the Union recognized this as a way to free slaves, while the confederates fought to preserve slavery since they perceived it as a backbone of their society. Additionally, the increased sectionalism led to disagreements on society’s basis. Southerners felt a growing dissent for the North, who wanted to phase out slavery and adopt their increasingly popular urbanized farms. Ultimately, the State’s rights remained a critical issue with the South arguing that each state should be autonomous and assert the right to secede at any time. The North, on the other hand, wanted to preserve the Union. Therefore, these constituted the fundamental reasons that triggered the war and required to be addressed to unite the different regions after a war that took the lives of thousands of soldiers and left more rifts.
