The Unification of Germany and the Unification of Italy
The unification of Germany and that of Italy stand out among the most phenomenal political and geopolitical events of 19th century Europe. These movements were spontaneous and were influenced by a number of internal and external factors, which were both similar and different in various ways. Among these were events in France and the French revolution, which promoted nationalistic and liberalist ideas. Also, Napoleon Bonaparte’s activities, engraved in the Napoleonic Code, promoted the courses in different ways, making it possible for both Germany and Italy to visualize unification. Conversely, there were differences in the processes leading to these unifications. While these differences lay in foreign intervention and geographical situations in each territory, the major similarities were on pioneering states for the process, commonness in culture in each location, leadership of specific people, the Napoleonic Effect, and the Congress of Vienna.
