Slavery in Africa
Slavery in Africa means the establishment of slavery as it occurred in Africa, and the impacts of global slave-trade methods on African individuals and communities. Just like in many parts of the world, slavery, or compulsory human servitude, was experienced across Africa from ancient times to the modern era. When slavery crosses in the mind of modern human beings, many imagine the manner in which it occurred in America moments before the 1861-1865 Civil War: one culturally perceptible group possessing and manipulating others. But, in other different regions of the universe, slavery has taken various dimensions (Lampe and Armando 421). In Africa, many communities acknowledged slavery simply as property, but others regarded them as dependents who, ultimately could be incorporated into families of slave owners. More still, in other communities slaves were allowed to be even administrators or military officers. More frequently, slaves and slave owners alike, were black Africans, though they were often from varied cultures. Usually, African slaves were sold elsewhere to perform manual labor, to make the slave owner appear might, or to serve as concubines and even wives.
Habits of slavery in Africa were improved to some degree starting in the 7th century by the dual groups from Europe and the Muslim world. It is written in history that Arab Muslims raided and sold Black Africans in the East, West, and Central Africa between 7th and 20th century, transporting hundreds of thousands of slaves to North Africa and some parts of Asia year in year out (Da Silva and Daniel Domingues 112). The Europeans began to buy millions of slaves from the East, West, and Central Africa between 15th and 19th century. These slaves were then sold to the Caribbean, Europe, and different parts of America. These two overlying waves of pancontinental slave trade helped to grow the economies of different states of Africa while at the same time endangered millions of black Africans who were enslaved.
