Nelson Mandela
The political struggles of 20th Century produced an array of leaders with diverse characters. Though the qualities of most political leaders during this period were shaped by the prevailing socio-econ-political conditions of their communities and nations, some of these leaders overcame such trappings and influenced many people to achieve greatness. The list for such leaders is long; however, Nelson Mandela stands out among the political heroes of the 20th Century. The resilience and perseverance exuded by Nelson Mandela in his quest to free the people of South Africa from the yokes of colonialism and apartheid rule and the unconditional forgiveness of his tormentors brings him out as a compassionate, humane, and ethical leader.
Nelson Mandela had a compassion for all people, including those who were indifferent to him (SAHO). The love for mankind makes it possible for most people to forgive their friends and strangers easily every time they are wronged. However, the forgiveness of one's enemies is a litmus test for most people. The forgiveness extended to the Apartheid regime by Nelson Mandela exemplifies the compassion he had for his enemies despite being jailed for 27 years on tramped up charges (SAHO). Through this action, Mandela left a legacy of reconciliation and forgiveness, which are the fundamental aspects of compassion.
