The book evidently demonstrates ancient cultures practiced by the Tang and Han dynasties prior to the onrush of the Western Jin dynasty. Over a long time the Chinese dynasties underwent tremendous directional and philosophical changes as governments were built up with the support of great families and brilliant strategists. China’s reunification of the three major kingdoms was established by the Jin dynasty. However, after sometime the Jin dynasty fell and territories were taken by alien rulers both in the Southern and Northern kingdoms.
The initial formed governments of this period were weak and rarely attempted to curb tendencies for social inequality. Aristocracy developed rapidly in this regime, especially among the noble in the society as personal bondage extended at the bottom. Sureness on the Confucian perception of political and social order declined leading to a religious hysteria whereby individuals from all walks of life established their hope in religions offering transcendence and salvation. Primarily, Daoism and Buddhism was practiced widely and hence expanded China’s religious and intellectual imagination. With advancing religious tendencies, Buddhism greatly influenced visual arts especially painting and sculpturing.
