The United States Indian Policy
The interaction of different communities has the potential to manifest benefits for all the involved parties. European nations entered America with a variety of dreams and visions over the already occupied territories. Their interactions with the natives grew into a contentious issue studied throughout history. Remnants of these interactions are evident in the evolution of the federal Indian policies that are still in effect today. The development of Native American reservations was an attempt to reduce friction between these parties. American settlers were involved in internal and external conflicts that had a substantial impact on the Native Indians. Constantly evolving federal Indian Policies demonstrate competing interests by the government to impose higher authority within native territories. The failure of treaties, reservations, and interaction policies is a statement of the shifting perspective on Native Indian claims to their land and freedoms. These inconsistencies were observed during the 19th century after the implementation of dramatic changes to the federal Indian policies during the Civil War. The North and South conflict is hailed as the birth of the young United States nation, leading to the revision of previously enforced policies to accommodate a broader vision for the country. The federal Indian policy has evolved to accommodate western ideas in the context of coexistence.[Richland and Deer 2010:82.]
