Trend Essay: Why Uber Remains Popular Today
Even though many people would want to argue differently, due to its unique services, Uber is indeed a long-lasting hit. “Uber is a German word which means: ultimate, above all, the best, top, something that nothing is better than.” (Paronda, et al.). For the last decade, the word “Uber” has been adopted by a transportation network company, best known for its ride-hailing taxi app. Results have shown that Uber technology has the potential to be a long-lasting hit. Some of the reasons why Uber is increasingly becoming a pop-culture icon are discussed in Derek Thompson’s Hit Makers: How Things Become Popular. It is “Uber’s disruptive technology, explosive growth, and constant controversy make it one of the most fascinating companies to emerge over the past decade.” (Blystone). Nowadays, most people often prefer Uber to Taxis and Lyft.
“The best hit makers are gifted at creating moments of meaning by marrying new and old, anxiety and understanding. They are architects of familiar surprises.” (Thompson 7). In more precise words, some customers are curious to discover new things, and at the same time, scared of anything that seems too new. This is what Thomson in Hit Makers: How Things Become Popular called the MAYA (Most Advanced Yet Acceptable) rule. Uber provides its customers with familiar transportation services which are more convenient. For instance, Uber as a means of transport is fast and cheaper compared to other means. Additionally, it is up to the hit makes to turn new ideas into marketable brands strategically. With its unique services, Uber is a trend that stands out from its competitors. As Prasai, et al states, “Uber positioned themselves as the primary transportation service for businesspeople and millennials. The quality of the Uber experience stands out from competitors with their simple, efficient and on demand approach to the car service industry.”
