"What lessons we should retrieve from history?"
History refers to the study of man’s past events in a chronological order. For several years, there has been a question of why it is important to study the science, games, arts and other the ways of life of those who lived in the past. The objective of this paper is to provide an answer to this question by carrying out an in-depth analysis of some of the lessons that we should retrieve from studying our past. The paper recommends that, studying history is not only important because it helps us to find a solution to the contemporary challenges but it also provides ways of preparing for a better future
Among the lessons that we should retrieve from studying history include the following; First, we should reclaim the traditional peaceful ways of settling conflicts. Tosh states that in traditional societies, "there were several conflicts that occurred between communities" (2). Despite the fact that most ancient communities did not have any written constitution, they had different ways of solving the conflicts amongst them. Such methods included arbitration, mediation and negotiations (Williams 25). In the current society, there are several conflicts between family members, tribes and even countries. Such conflicts have led to wars and loss of several lives. Retrieving the historical ways of solving conflicts will provide a solution to the contemporary conflicts that the people face in the society. Consequently, we will realize a community that is free from conflicts.
Secondly, we should retrieve the traditional culture and ways of life. Given the vastness of history, we should learn the past way of life so that we can understand the contemporary society. As Williams observe by looking at the past way of dressing "we can understand the current and even predict about the future lifestyle" (19). History should also enable us to appreciate diversity in culture. This lesson is necessary it will work towards understanding all the cultures. Through this, we will have a society that does not despise how the lifestyle of other people. However, everyone will be appreciative of diversity in cultures.
