Morion County Circuit Court is located in Oregon, Morion County Courthouse building and operates from 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday. The court has 12 courtrooms to ensure justice is not delayed and there is no backlog of cases. Additionally, the Court has several judges and subordinates staff to enhance the decision-making process. The Court is committed to serving all members of the public in a free and fair manner. I attended a criminal court hearing in courtroom 2b presided over by Honorable David Leith on December 10th, 2016 in this particular Court. The parties in the dispute were John V. Rooney Defendant.
It was a homicide case whereby the defendant was charged with involuntary manslaughter. The defendant had shot and killed a colleague with a shotgun during a peaceful demonstration held at Riverfront City Park. The prosecutor said that the accused should be sentenced with homicide because he acted recklessly, irresponsible, and carelessly. He added that the defendant was a threat to national security; therefore, he should be subject to the maximal sentence. Nevertheless, the defendant attorney argued on behalf of the defendant that the conduct was not irresponsible but a mere tragic accident. He added that the defendant was on medication and he could not make an informed decision during the demonstration.
