Animals have been regarded as our closest living companions for much of our existence on this planet. From dogs that we keep as pets to extraordinary creatures that we love to observe in their naturalhabitats. Specifically, when talking about animal consciousness, this is something that has been a hot topic amongst many. As more and more people in the world believe that animals are indeed entitled to rights and as such, be regarded as conscious and self-aware creatures. Amongst many, Tom Regan, American Philosopher, makes heavy debate out of the matter in his book “The Case for Animal Rights.” In his writing, Tom Regan presents an argument for the moral rights of animals from the backdrop of them being “subjects-of-a-life” (Lengauer, 87). This essay, therefore, focuses on this presentation and gives a response to the arguments presented by Tom Regan in this case, as well as challenging some of the premises of the arguments.
