A constitution is a set of law serving various purposes within the society. The constitution establishes basic structure of the government while identifying what the government possesses power and where the power lies. Constitution reduces the powers of the state by initiating civil liberties that cannot be violated by the government. The purpose of this research the explanation of the influence of Texas Constitution in the political history of shaping modern day politics, culture, and the government.
Texas operates under five constitutions, and the current functional constitution was written in 1876.Texas’ 1876 constitution is the sixth constitution elaborating the central rule controlling Texas. The 1876 constitution represents Texas’ relationship with the Mexican and Spanish through the historical structure of the constitution. It represented the relationships with Spaniards and Mexicans revealed through its provisions in sections focusing on debts, lands, water, spousal relations including adoptions and legal procedures. The constitution was also influenced by the Jacksonian agrarianism which supported on the separation of the power of the state and church. Texas constitution performs both the purposes of establishing the basic structure of the functional government and limiting the government powers by enshrining the civil liberties government cannot violate. The constitution specifically reflects the prevailing political culture of Texas State a culture that is uncomfortable to the government and suspicious of central power. It shows the popular and general sovereignty exhibiting the political theory that government is established by the subject to the will of the people. Current Texas constitution is the same as the original 1876 document though there have been more than 400 amendments. The constitutions’ original philosophy reflects on the political culture and values of its initiators (Collier 25).
