Vertical Farming
Vertical farming is a concept of farming that was introduced in the early 1900. This method of farming involves rearing plant life on vertical surfaces more so on skyscrapers; the plants are planted on the floors of the sky scrapper’s which provide ample space depending on the number of floors in the building (Coronado, 2015). Vertical farming is mainly dependent on hydroponics, controlled lighting and watering. The method can be used for growing light plants like vegetables and fruits that do not grow too big or demand for a lot of space to thrive(Philips, 2013). Some people also apply vertical farming to plant flowers in their offices for beautification and fresh air.
In the current times, vertical farming is being applied in America and other parts of the world to produce pesticide free harvests. This is because vertical farming defies any weather since the plants can be planted in controlled green houses in the skyscrapers. On the other side, one can purposely build and open skyscraper the single purpose of vertical farming (Phillips, 2013). This will help save on space and as building will only take a small space of land compared to the number of floor surface it will have for vertical farming. Vertical farming is being practiced in the world irrespective of the climate. The controlled lighting, watering and hydroponics facilitate and no use of soil allows the practice to be done under any climate. Vertical farms are also being applied to control global warming (Kozai et.al, 2015). The plant life helps keep the supply fresh air from the farms as well as save on up 90% of the water that may have otherwise be used in the normal farming (Kozai et.al, 2015).
Vertical farms are also being to transform abandoned buildings to productive farms. Vertical farming companies are taking over abandoned disaster cites as well as manufacturing plants and converting them to vertical farms and thus reducing crime and other illegal activities that formerly used this cites as hideouts (Kozai et.al, 2015) Vertical farming is also becoming more advanced with the application of technology in areas such as lighting, it has been recently discovered that pink lighting provides blue and red wavelengths that are required for photosynthesis (Phillips, 2013). The vertical farms are being applied by pharmaceutical companies to controllably grow medicinal plants that are then used in the production of medicine thus saving lives (Coronado, 2015).
