Introduction
This paper aims to argue the statement that many modern-day mathematicians believe Europeans discovered Algebra. Since medieval times, Algebra has become a critical element in Mathematics. Many modern-day mathematicians believe that Europeans engendered Algebra. Yet, some scholars argue that Algebra was first discovered by Islamic scholars led by Musa Al-Khwarizmi.
Historical Development of Algebra
The early study of algebra flourished during the Islamic golden age between the 7th and 13th century. This is the time the Islamic scholars coined the word ‘Al-Jabr’ to mean a reunion of broken parts or completion. These renowned scholars were Al-Khwarizmi, Al-Kindi, Al-Karaji, and Al-Batani. According to Sesiano (92), the basics of algebra developed in those early years contributed significantly to the present day arithmetical decimal system. Apart from introducing the ‘zero’ concept, the Islamic mathematicians invented the fundamental mathematical operations such as root extraction, division, multiplication,
