Restaurant Industry in Paris
Introduction
Paris, the capital of France, is located centrally in the country and its geographical location makes it more attractive. There are many outdoor activities that people are able to carry when they visit Paris and this makes the city attractive to tourist activities. There is also a wealth of French culture in Paris, which further attracts people in the city (Applefield 79). Theatre and movie events are common in addition to offering different exhibitions and festivals for the visitors. There are established information centers that are located in Paris city to offer necessary information to visiting tourists. This hospitality attracts more tourists to the city, which eventually contributes to revenue for the government. Different business enterprises target the increased number of tourists in Paris city with their products. The business range of curio shops, dancers and restaurants, which offer both meals and accommodation services. Each of the businesses tries to tailor-make their products to suit the foreseeable needs of tourists who visit the region for leisure. It is also common to find transport business through the use of taxes in the city, where tourists are taken to different places of their interest.
However, the restaurant industry is focusing on the need to serve both locals and the international tourists. This is through diversification of its activities and prices of various commodities. This means that the industry is focused on segmenting its services to suit the needs of customers, especially in relation to level of income. The industry has also increased the number of services it is offering through diversification of its activities. This is achieved through establishing services such as transport for their customers from airports and also as they tour the country. In Paris there are also tour guides that have been employed in the restaurant industry to ensure that international tourists are taken to their places of interests (Applefield 85). This service helps retain the customers and build more loyalty, which increases their chances of visiting the restaurant in the future. Through the transport services, the tourists can be taken back to the restaurant in the evening where they spend their night. Offering both accommodation and food further add to the value customers gets from the industry. This increases their convenience during their visit and they feel more contented during their stay in the identified restaurants.
To progress further in the restaurant industry, owners of restaurants and hotels need to have adequate resources. Resources that are necessary include buildings, human resource and capital. This is in addition to adequate space where the clients are able to park their vehicles and relax when they are in the restaurants. There are various opportunities for the restaurant industry, which is influenced by increased tourist arrivals in France over the years (Applefield 87). The tourists also come as families which further offer opportunities for accommodation. The fact that the majority of the tourists are new in the country, offers an opportunity for the restaurant industry to offer transport and tour guiding services. This adds to the profitability of the industry in addition to its perceived growth in future. However, there are few threats in the industry, which include increased competition within the industry. There are many restaurants that are coming up in Paris, which poses a threat of increased competition in the future. The other threat is the diversification of tourists based on their country of origin which requires the industry to be aware of their culture. This paper looks at opportunities and threats facing resources, supply, demand, capital, innovations and regulation in the restaurant industry in Paris.
Opportunities and threats from identified factors in Paris restaurant industry
Resources
Paris city is characterized by beautiful structures which look unique and attractive to the tourists. Most of the restaurants occupy these structures, and they influence tourists who want to visit them regularly. In terms of space, the restaurants in Paris are well spaced which adds to their attractiveness to the tourists. Generally, natural resources such as land are adequate in setting up restaurants in the city and come up with different leisure grounds. Paris is also not very far from the Atlantic Ocean, which adds its proximity to other natural resources. In the Atlantic Ocean, there are numerous beaches that tourists from across the world visit regularly (Durmaz, et al 197). These increased numbers of tourists require transportation, accommodation and food services; which are offered by the restaurant industry. The people working in the restaurant industry are also professionals. This ensures that the services offered to customers are of high quality. In addition, there are several institutions of higher learning in Paris that offer training in hospitality, and thus, the restaurants have an increased pool of qualified employees to choose from.
However, there are few threats facing the industry, which is related to resources such as land. The cost of acquiring a piece of land is relatively high with few individuals being able to purchase. This is a threat to expansion of some of the existing restaurants which requires buying additional lands. If the restaurants are not able to buy more land, they may end up suffering from congestion. The congestion will limit the numbers of tourists visiting the restaurants in Paris and this will affect negatively profitability. Further, if the restaurants will not be able to expand they are likely to lose some customers to competitor restaurants outside Paris city (Durmaz, et al 204). Further, raw materials used in the restaurants are being delivered from distant places, and this adds to the cost of operations in the restaurants. This is a threat to the existence and profitability of the restaurant industry in Paris.
Supply
There is an opportunity of increased supply of human resource materials in Paris, which adds to the ability of the restaurant industry to offer diversified services. There are also various people from different parts of the world who have settled in Paris, and provide labor in the restaurant industry (Maitland and Newman, 47). The diversity in the origin of these people enables the industry to understand the expectations of tourists from different parts. Therefore, these individuals once employed in the restaurants are able to match the products served to the clients to their unique cultures. There are also various tourist agents in the city which offer the opportunity to get more customers by the restaurants. The agents are able to connect with tourists when they arrive at the airport. The restaurant industry has an opportunity of partnering with these agencies to ensure that they bring the tourists to them for accommodation. This increases chances of the restaurants receiving large numbers of customers. The opportunity also reduces costs that would be incurred by the restaurants offering transport services to the tourists.
There are however certain threats that face supply in the restaurant industry in Paris. One of the threats is increased pricing of petroleum fuels, which are likely to be reflected in increased cost for transport. Transport of raw materials necessary for running of restaurants may become expensive, thus reducing attractiveness of the industry. This may also result to touring agencies charging extra costs to restaurants for delivery of their customers. The constant fluctuation of currency may also limit the amount of raw materials and other necessary materials the industry is able to purchase (Maitland and Newman, 53). This may significantly affect the supply of some of the important products to the restaurants, thus limiting their variety of customers. If customers are not able to get what they order, they are likely to shift to other restaurants in other parts of France.
Demand
Demand for restaurant services is increasing in European countries giving the restaurant industry an opportunity to grow. People in Europe are becoming more interested in culture and thus there are increased visits to Paris to experience the diversified cultures (De Klumbis 2). The number of retired individuals who love travelling is also increasing and they prefer visiting Paris. These groups of individuals have money to spend and they offer an opportunity for restaurants to offer the various services. It is also observable that the number of people within and outside France that are rising to middle and high income levels is increasing. This means that these individuals are more willing to have leisure outside their homes. Therefore, the groups and the individuals carry out holiday travels to regions that offer then best experience. Paris, which has numerous tourist attractions in addition to good weather most times of the years acts as the preferred destiny for these tourists. The tourists are also active in leisure activities such as swimming, which makes the restaurant industry have the opportunities to offer these services. The identified needs of the customers and especially tourist offers restaurants with the opportunities to diversify their services.
However, it is important to note that the restaurant industry is facing a threat in the demand of its services due to the decreasing population growth in most European countries. This is attributed by the increased practice of family planning programs. In addition, most families are only willing to raise one or two children. This means that in the future there may be declining number of tourists visiting Paris, thus negatively affecting restaurant industry. There is also a growing trend of single parents in t...
