Abortion
Abortion has been one of the biggest controversies in the society for a long period. Many are of the idea that it is morally wrong and liken it to murder. Abortion can be defined as the premature removal or termination of a pregnancy before the fetus has attained the capabilities of normal growth. The supporting factions on either side of the debate each have strong opinions on the legality of abortion and what impact it has on the society. Opponents of abortion are of the idea that every life is sacred and as such all life should be preserved. On the other hand, proponents of abortion advocate that each woman should have the opportunity to choose whether to keep a pregnancy to full term. Life is sacred and should not be terminated for any reason; as such, abortion is legally, ethically and morally wrong.
One of the main reason why abortion should not be legalized is because abortion is paramount to murder. According to all the religious doctrines, everyone has a right to life. This includes the fetus, embryo and in some religious doctrines, a newly fertilized egg. All of these situations constitute a life. According to the various scientific studies, most physicians and scientists share and support the idea that life begins the moment the sperm cell unites with the egg cell or the ovum (Prager). According to proponents of abortion, abortion is not murder, as the expulsion of a fetus is not considered as murder in that the fetus is not in a position to make rational decisions rather it is simply the expulsion of a mass of cells. However, this assertion is not valid. By this argument, taking the life of a newly born baby would also not be considered as murder as the infant is also not in a position to live without total dependence on the mother. After conception, there is no occurrence in the development of the fetus that indicates a change from not being human to human. As such, a fetus is indeed a human life and its termination is paramount to murder.
Legalization of abortion effectively leads to the erosion of morals in the society. By legalizing abortion, the youth in the society are taught that any unwanted pregnancy can be solved by simply terminating the pregnancy prematurely. According to research carried out by Kaczor (2014), it was observed that in nations where abortion is legal, more young people are engaging in hazardous sexual escapades because they take comfort in the fact that they can always abort in the event they accidentally get pregnant. Legalizing abortion in a large enough scale will thus lead to an erosion of moral values, which will eventually lead to less regard on the value of human life.
The health risks involved after a pregnant woman gets an abortion as well as the subsequent lifelong risks that linger after the operations is also another reason why abortion should not be legalized. In most nations, the cost of healthcare and the chances to get sick are constantly increasing. As such, self-imposed health problems, for instance, the termination of a pregnancy prematurely that is more likely to lead to more complications such as depression is not logical. Instead of promoting abortion as a form of birth control, there should strategies in place to educate the youth on the possibilities of putting up the baby for adoption in the event the mother is not in a position to support the baby (Giubilini and Minerva 3).
