Death Penalty
Introduction
The death penalty is among the most controversial topics in the world, particularly in the USA. Even though the capital punishment is permitted in 36 states and the District of Columbia, it continues to stir heated debates among both the proponents and the opponents. The issues related to the application of death sentence in the USA range from the legal and extralegal characteristics on the prosecutorial choice to seek the death penalty to the jurors’ role in death sentencing, and the general societal attitudes and perceptions towards the application of the death sentence. Both the proponents and the abolitionists cite various reasons for supporting and opposing the application of capital punishment. Some of the standard arguments are grounded on the effectiveness of the technique in deterring crime, the morality of the practice, and the influence of the practice to the society, among others. Grounded on insightful analysis of both the proponents and the abolitionists' arguments and related topics on current issues associated with the death penalty, the paper argues the practice is immoral, ignores human rights and ineffective in deterring crime.
