Surrogate Mothers: Superheroines or Money-Makers?
Helping someone achieve their dream of parenthood is an adventure like no other, but it can also be quite overwhelming. From the medical point of view, a surrogate mother is a gestational carrier of somebody else’s child, and she shall relinquish parental rights in favor of the intended parents after childbirth. Surrogacy is conducted through artificial insemination, and it is usually a measure taken by couples who have underlying conditions creating complications for normal delivery. Despite the negative perception associated with surrogacy, these women are courageous and selfless, investing emotionally, mentally, and physically to make parenthood a reality for deserving intended parents.
The idea that women would be surrogates solely out of financial need is absurd. That is an ignorant and ridiculously rude assumption. Actually, one of the requirements to be a surrogate is that one must be financially stable and not on any government assistance. Also, thorough psychological evaluations are completed before signing any contracts to ensure that the surrogate mother is not mentally unstable. One can only hope that in the end, every party involved is at peace with the outcome. Although many narratives negatively associate money with surrogacy, it is essential to know that families are being successfully created every day through this process.
