Introduction
The Communication Privacy Management Theory proposes that every human being requires privacy. Moreover, it also asserts that people need to decide the type and the amount of information they share and keep to themselves. Besides, the theory further claims that the decision to keep or disclose the information can be either beneficial or harmful to the concerned people (Griffins 151).
The main components of the Communication Privacy Theory
The Communication Privacy Management Theory has the following main components. Privacy rules, shared boundaries, private boundaries, control and ownership, rule-based management, and private dialectical tension. To start with, private dialectical tension is a case where people tend to have a dilemma of whether to reveal or to conceal an information considered private. Moreover, shared boundaries as one of the components of the Communication Private Management Theory is a situation where the discloser of the private information is not the only individual owning the information (Griffins 154). Besides, private boundaries are the crossing lines that distinguish a private information from the public information. In most of the cases, there are no defined private boundaries because such boundaries are set in a manner that they are neither rigid nor fully permeable.
Additionally, privacy rules are guidelines that people use to decide on the methods and the means of disseminating a private information to others. Privacy rules depend on the following: context, gender, culture, risk-benefit ratio, as well as the motivation (Griffins 154). Another component is the rule-based management. Rule-based management is frameworks that are employed by the people to make decisions regarding their private lives. Rule-based management works closely with three other components such as privacy rules, private boundaries, and shared boundaries (Griffins 155). Private dialectical tension is a situation where people strive at managing tension that arises from either concealing or revealing a private information. Lastly, control and ownership is the ability of the people to have control of their private information by having the rights of keeping them private or making them public (Griffins 152).
Application of the Communication Privacy theory components
The primary concept of the theory is sharing or keeping the private information. I always apply the private boundary as one of the components of the theory. It provides me with the rationale for deciding the information to keep secret and the information to share with the public. Moreover, the components are also important to me because they have assisted me in having a deeper understanding of the management of both the private and public information.
