Components of the Sexual Impulse
Sexual instinct refers to the feelings resulting from or associated with the urge to gratify one’s sex desires. According to Freud (128), the urge manifests itself regardless of the age or sex contrary to common belief that depicts it as an irresistible attraction witnessed in sexually mature individual towards the opposite sex.From his research, he suggests that the impulse is triggered by stimuli whose sources may be the external world, organic interior as well as one's mental life. Sigmund closely observes animals and children in his attempt to define the relationship between social development, culture, neurotics with sexual instincts
The environment in which individuals are raised constitutes their behavior. Their sex drive will, therefore, correlate with their early social experience according to Freud (202).It means that children, just like adults experience sexual urges that are expressed through emotions such as autoeroticism and thumb sucking. The stages of through which one develops can be classified as oral, anal, phallic, the latent and genital stages. As they grow, adult sexuality gradually emerges a phenomenon that is commonly associated with puberty. What an individual goes through constitutes his/her mental life which will ultimately have an effect on the somantic process that takes place on the part of the body under stimulation. From the argument, it is observed that a faulty social development impacts negatively on the sexual behavior which ultimately affects the sex
