People’s behavior, thoughts, actions, and attitudes represent the concept of their culture. How individuals acquire such traits is manifested in the process of cultural transmission. By definition, culture refers to a collection of values, behavioral scripts, attitudes, and beliefs that are commonly agreed upon by a group of individuals (Mesoudi 481). Culture can include marriage practices, language, greeting behaviors, death rituals, governmental configurations, and housing structures. A fundamental role of culture is to offer a stable and consistent framework or environment that seeks to ensure or enhance the group’s survival. Overall, individuals acquire their culture through cultural transmission, which takes place through imitation and learning.
Social or cultural transmission connotes the process through which traditions, behavioral norms, beliefs, preferences, and other cultural aspects are passed from one individual (or group) to another through imitation, teaching, or language.
