The Drug Enforcement Agency vs. El Chapo Guzman
Joaquin El Chapo Guzman’s feats of escaping drag nets could only be matched by his acumen in drug-smuggling. Six months before his arrest, he had escaped from Mexico’s most secure prison thereby humiliating the Mexican authorities. That was his second escape from prison in twenty years. The authorities were determined not to let him slip through their fingers. Despite their resolve to re-arrest him, there were left with no doubt about how angry he was to have been arrested. During his dramatic arrest on January 2016, he had warned police that they were all going to die. Three years later, Guzman was re-arrested and handed a life sentence plus thirty years after the courts found him guilty of international drug smuggling. Guzman through his lawyers said that his trial was unfair and that being put in solitary confinement was equivalent to torture.
