Overcrowding is a condition where many people are located in a given space that is considered tolerable from a safety and health viewpoint. Overcrowding can arise temporarily or regularly at home, on public transportation, or in an unrestricted space. Usually, the home is a space for individual shelter, and specific concerns arise when there is overcrowding at home. This is because overcrowding affects the quality of life that a person will live as it leads to poor hygiene practices, which can increase the risks of infections and health problems for human beings. When many people are living in one space, the number of potential transmitters of infections increases leading to increased risks of infections, especially for children who can get more severe infections.
Overcrowding can cause a lack of sleep because of the inadequate space available for many people to live, sleep and perform household duties. Consistent reduction of sleep will lead to sleep deprivation (Clair, Amy 620). Also, when one lacks enough sleep, it leads to difficulty in concentrating during the day, and it could also affect the mood and behavior of the person negatively. This could lead to the person missing work or having difficulty concentrating, reducing productivity. Also, overcrowding affects human beings as it causes a lack of privacy, placing a strain on social relations at home and in the community. There is also a link between overcrowding at schools to substandard education for children.
