Team Report 7: Employment in Mexico
The country of Mexico is currently ranked 74th in the Gender Development Index with a value of 0.334 in the year 2018, according to the most recent Human Development Report published by the United Nations. It is highly alarming to realize that women are underrepresented in all levels of the workforce in Mexico; in fact, based on a study conducted in 2018 by the consulting firm McKinsey & Company, women hold 37% percent of entry-level positions and only 10% of managerial positions, implying there are limited opportunities of advancement for women in the corporate hierarchy, since men are 88% more likely to reach senior management positions. In the 2017 OECD report The Pursuit of Gender Equality: An Uphill Battle, it is demonstrated the percentage gap in gender employment in Mexico was 33.5% in the year 2016, which is the same value recorded in 2012 and also much higher than the OECD average at 11.2%.
