"Does gay marriage harm anyone?"
Gay marriage has a significant harm to the individuals involved. Gay marriage refers to a marital union between people of the same sex. Majority of the effects are on the individuals married and these can be classified based on lifestyle, psychological and health categories. They suffer psychological effects such as depression, lifestyle effects such as promiscuity and shortened life span, the health effects include expose to diseases.
Gay marriage poses depression to the partners. A study conducted in the United Kingdom asserts that approximately half of the gay partners develop depression and this often results in drug abuse when compared to the other members of the population. Moreover, the depression results in high increase in the suicidal actions. According to the study findings, the lifespan of these partners is often lower compared to heterosexuals (Josephson, 269). The depression is likely to result from the pressure given by the culture, friends, as well as family members. This has been supported by statistics in the United States population census analysis, which depict a trend in the life expectancy of the gay as lagging between the age of 40 and 50 years. These gay partners are likely to have reduced tolerance to diseases such as HIV/AIDs.
The health effects include breast cancer, which is commonly experienced by the lesbians. A study conducted by the “Gay and Lesbian Medical Association,” indicated that those lesbians who indulged in alcohol consumption and were overweight had higher chances of developing breast cancer. Moreover, lung cancer was also an additional risk exposed to the women. Gay population in the American state has an average of 2% (Eskridge and Darren). However, research has shown that the infection rates of HIV/AIDs are 61% more in this group. That trend has been since 2009. This came clear after Center for Disease Control released its data on analysis of data since 1990s. The homosexuals are therefore at an increased chance of developing HIV/AIDs. Homosexuality is a promiscuous affair and therefore the partners are likely to indulge in other sexual activities with other parties outside this marriage.
The lifespan of the gay partners has been observed to be lower when compared to any other heterosexual partner. This is according to a publication made on international Epidemiology. The study indicated a decrease in the life expectancy be a range of about eight to a maximum of 20 years. There were studies, which indicate this reduced life span was also associated with domestic violence. The social research indicated that this was a common phenomenon in the gays. Health outcomes in one’s life were associated closely with ones history of sex (Meezan and Jonathan, 95). A study indeed indicated that about close to most of these engage in mo...
