Gender can simply be used to refer to sex. Sex is the categorization of animals as either male or female. To know the gender of an animal, one only need to look at the sexual organ of the animal. The sexual organ will determine the sex of the animal as either male or female.
The gender of a person can also be determined by what role they play in the society. Men and women are in the society play some different roles. Men are well suited for difficult tasks that require a lot of strength since they are masculine. On the other hand, women play some softer roles since they do not have some developed muscles as they are feminine.
Gender is perceived in the society as the roles that can be played by men and women. From the ancient times, men are perceived to be superior to women across the globe. They are mostly the bread winners of their families as well as their leaders. Most of the firms across the globe have more men or the male gender workers and fewer women. In this context, men are perceived to be taking a lot of role in building the economy of the society. It is for this reason that our societies have been dominated by men from the biblical times. Sometimes there have been a movement led by powerful states such as the United States of America to bring equality of gender within the global societies. However, it is in such a powerful country where all the presidents have been male. In this case, it tells us that men have been enjoying the status quo to be powerful than women.
Sometimes gender and sex discrimination is not only a problem associated with men. Although human beings do expose the discrimination against women, the discrimination may seem to be natural across the other animals. As most women are placed by the society to look after the children, animals too tend to place the female mothers as the ones with the responsibility to look after their young ones. For example, a pride of lions the lioness is handed the sole responsibility of raising the young ones by way of hunting for their meals and protecting them.
