Name Professor Course Date Genetically Modified Foods Opposition While genetically modified foods (GMOs) have been scientifically proven to be safe for human consumption, besides bridging nutritional and environmental gaps in organic foods, some opponents drive doubts and fear in public about their safety leading to global opposition. However, as Fernbach et al. (2019) posit, many who oppose GMOs lack credible evidence and only base their arguments on rumors and ignorance. Opposition to genetically modified Foods lacks scientific evidence and is based on ignorance and subjective knowledge. The greatest opponents of GMOs have less objective knowledge about them. A study carried out in three countries shows that the more information people have about GMOs' safety, environmental and social concerns, the less likely they are to oppose it (Fernbach et al., 2019). People would rather accept genetically engineered medical procedures such as gene therapy than GMOs, even though the effects are the same, probably due to compromised knowledge. For some people, community or group beliefs determine their stand on GMOs. If the group does not advocate for them for whatever reason, individuals may oppose the foods regardless of their knowledge (Fernbach et al., 2019). In this case, individuals may cite alternative reasons for opposition, such as effects on the environment, animals, or morality. Interestingly, those with a knowledge deficit about GMOs are the most difficult to educate because they are overconfident and unaware of their own shortcomings.
