Education is critical in shaping individuals and preparing them for their future careers. Moreover, many parents strive to enroll their children in the best schools they can afford to build their future. Similarly, teachers and school administrations are keen on giving their students the best experience throughout the education journey (Fanari et al. 1). Some institutions have exchange programs that allow students to study in foreign countries to gain new academic and social experiences.
However, although the exchange programs are designed to enhance learners' experience, the trend also has significant psychological impacts on the participants. Although exchange programs help students to build self-efficacy, moving to a new environment disrupts their emotional stability (Götz et al. 690; Fanari et al. 3). For example, students may experience culture shock, which makes them develop anxiety, confusion, and uncertainty. In such situations, the exchange students may develop emotional distance, which leads to homesickness (Fanari et al. 3). Furthermore, the emotional distance can also cause psychological issues like stress and depression.
