Introduction
Hydroponics is the methodology of growing plants without using soil. This system of cultivation makes it possible to grow plants around the year, which is better as compared to growing plants in soil. Hydroponics is a technology that has a history in various ancient civilizations that planted foods in harsh environmental conditions. Evidence proved that different civilizations used hydroponics and proved that hydroponics was preferred over the soil. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the seven wonders of the world, and the Floating Gardens of Chinampas of the Aztecs are some of the earliest examples of where hydroponics was utilized successfully (The Natural Farmer). For that reason, it meant that hydroponics is actually better than soil and most probably sufficient for the environment. According to The Natural Farmer, the study of plant nutrients is what helped scientists replace the soil with hydroponics, mainly because the culture used in this method sufficiently provides for the plants.
While the hydroponics has successfully replaced the use of soil in some areas, it has not been able to be adopted by enough people for the rest of the world to move to hydroponics. Like any other technology, hydroponics has its setbacks; for instance, it is expensive to set up and labor-intensive (trees.com). These are some of its disadvantages that people ignore because the hydroponics technology fulfills their needs.
