Supporting the Allowance of Transgender People in the Military
Introduction
The sharp increase in the population of transgender individuals, combined with the huge support of LGBTQ organizations, has influenced different institutions to start considering their inclusion. Caputo defines transgender as individuals who do not identify with the gender they were assigned at birth (par. 4). For instance, a person assigned the male gender at birth can later on begin to identify themselves as female or vice versa. Transgender persons often face gender dysphoria, which is a stressful condition caused by the disconnection between their assigned gender and their identity. According to the American Psychiatric Association, the nonconformity to the gender assigned at birth by transgender individuals is not a mental disorder but rather identification to the gender that aligns with their brain (Caputo par. 4). In the military, the inclusion of transgender into the service was passed through a policy established under President Obama’s administration. However, a year after Trump occupied the office, he decided to reverse the policy arguing that transgender individuals were not fit to serve in the military. The decision by the Trump administration was a controversial move leading to diverse opinions from different factions. This paper supports the allowance of transgender people in the military while providing a rebuttal to some counter arguments raised regarding the issue.
