The Second Amendment
Introduction
The United States constitution constitutes of a number of amendments, among them being the second amendment, which protects an individual’s right to own and carry arms. It was adopted 1791, December 15. This being said, the United States Supreme Court did however specify that the right does in no case, prohibit regulation neither is it unlimited. This applies to individuals and the local, state as well as the federal government. This right is categorized under the auxiliary rights of an individual, which uphold their natural rights to defend themselves resist oppression and defend the state when need arises. The amendment has undergone a number of inquiries and judicial changes, which were aimed at regulating and clarifying the limits of the right. The amendment has resulted in a lot of negative consequences from the time it was passed among them being increase in homicides, crime and suicides (Petersen).
The second amendment brought about an increase in firearms in the country, which in turn contributed to the number of homicides, since anyone who would qualify for a firearm was in possession of one. Even though the amendment was created to give the citizens the power to defend themselves, it quickly became their own undoing. There is increased gun violence in many parts of the country where people are killing each other in the name of self- defence. This has spiralled out of control as we see shooting being reported daily in the news. This is evidenced in the rise of school shootings that have become a reoccurring phenomenon in our schools. The columbine High School massacre is a perfect example of abuse of the right to bear arms, where two senior students Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold attacked their High school shooting at students and teachers. They killed twelve students and one teacher then later committed suicide. There are many cases since then, where students have ended killing their own classmates. The impact has also been felt in other areas where gang members resolve conflict by killing rival gang, for some, for one to become a member one has to kill in order to join. Basically since the amendment was passed, if you do not have a firearm you are helpless. The sad note is that the negative impacts have also contributed to deaths related to domestic violence where a spouse kills another. Study has shown that 2000 lives are claimed each year by domestic violence and in almost three quarters of the time the weapon used is a gun. This goes to show that people are more likely to abuse their right to have firearms rather than use it for its intended purpose (Petersen).
Crime has increased drastically with the implementation of the second amendment. Though ironical to the initial goal to reduce crime, firearms have now become available to anyone thus giving them the power to do whatever they want. A lot of robberies have been carried out where perpetrators are in possession firearms. All manner of crime has been aided by guns. Be it robberies, kidnapping even assault. Many stores across the United States have been robbed by individuals carrying firearms. The security cameras show how people abuse the right to own arms by using them to take whatever they like and instil fear. In some instances some have lost their lives trying to rob stores, houses and even banks where the owners and security guards also bear arms, this has led to loss of innocent lives. A good example is the Mississippi gun store shooting where a father and his son were killed in a shootout when an ensued. Another incident occurred at Bronx Hospital where a doctor opened fire in the hospital killing another doctor and wounding six. Firearms are being used more to commit crime rather than prevent ...
