College students should be given freedom to choose their courses
The international recognition of the freedom of choice as a human right calls for respect for people’s choices. Acting against the legal provisions of international law takes away the democratic meaning of the freedom that every citizen whether young or old is supposed to enjoy. For that reason, it is legally rational for a person to do what he or she wishes unless his or her actions infringe the rights of others. While considering the international law perspective, working against the wishes of college students in regards to the choosing of study programs amounts to freedom infringement (Stephens, Nicole M., et al. 148).
Furthermore, selecting a course could mean making up for a lifetime career. Defining a profession for someone by way of choosing a post-high school study program for him or her is dictating the way of life for the person. Limiting a student is wrong especially when considering the importance of decision ownership. If a student owns his or her educational choice, he or she will be willing to overcome the academic difficulty that might arise during the learning process. Otherwise, in times of an imposed decision the learner will tend to care less about the entire school program. Consequently, he or she performs poorly. The result, in this case, is to lament his or her career adviser.
Conclusively, the excited high school leavers might abuse the privilege to determine their educational plans and culminate in uninformed decisions. Voluntary career advice is suitable for such students. However, the freedom to choose be left to the learners. Otherwise, forcing scholars to take courses that they have little or no interest in, amount to academic slavery. Enslaving students is not the purpose of college education. Therefore, let the freedom reign.
