“The Return” Prisons and Public Education Response
From the given video, it is evident that black women are not largely covered in most historical studies of prisons and punishment in the Jim Crow South. Talitha LeFlouria gives a corrective perspective of this situation by providing literature on prisons and punishment during the times of Jim Crow. In the video, it is said that LeFlouria establishes her novel from the work of other authors who have explored the intersection between the patriarchy, white supremacy and economic exploitation by looking at the experiences of African American women who were punished by the use of Jim Crow laws which included a convict labor system.
Black women in Georgia worked alongside men who had been jailed and often suffered inhumane tortures and whippings which were often used on slaves. The women of that time went through sexual assault while in prison, while prison guards, wardens, whipping bosses and prison contractors often applied sexual humiliation as punishment. This assault is further evidenced by: “the institutionalized rape of black women has never been as powerful a symbol of black oppression as the spectacle of lynching…by providing historical analyses of the ways in which violence against African American women was central to the U.S history” (No Mercy Here, p.8).
