The Weaknesses of the Working Class
The theories of Karl Marx state that the organization in social classes deprives people from their humanity. The working class, without any means of production, has to sell the only two things they have available, their time and labour. However, this alienation makes the worker unable to determine their own destiny; the goals of the worker become the boss’ goals. Each person becomes an instrument and an extension of a system, more than the individual expression of the self. This alienation can be made of the worker from their work, where the worker is only used to produce value, where their opinion is irrelevant, only profit and value are important. Alienation of the worker from the production can also happen; the individual expression is irrelevant, standard guidelines of production are already made. Finally, there is the alienation of the worker as a producer since it is irrelevant to think of the work that what matters is to accomplish daily objectives, and imagination and innovation become irrelevant.
One of the four types of capital available is the physical capital: the value of equipment, machinery, infrastructures, and land. Type of capital is hard to obtain by the working class since it is of high value and takes a lot of investment. This capital often is included in a company with a determined goal, a goal that often is different from the individual ambitions of the worker. Next type is the human capital; this one is highly attainable by the workers, and after all, the workers can always improve themselves and add value to their capabilities. Another type of capital is the production of non-renewable energy resources; the latter are nearly impossible for the working class to obtain since they are in the top of the organizational level of societies, energy has always been source of crisis in a global scale, and the working class has no dimension to aspire reaching this capital. The land resources are the last capital to analyse and one that is reachable for the working class, but at a small scale, and to obtain a profit, in the actual model of business-intensive production, it is required to maximize the use of land.
The measure of poverty is important at social level since it allows developing programs to improve the wellbeing of populations. Understanding this threshold has been important to develop policies, research, and awareness by the general public. The current measure of poverty has remained unchanged for 30 years, becoming inadequate over time, the impact of 30 years of policies, evolution, and other social issues are not reflected, measures like food stamps, tax deductions, and work expenses are not taken into account.
