Maggie is a professional counselor and psychologist working with the gender-based violence recovery center. She is in her late thirties and has worked with the organization for the past thirteen years. She has several years of experience in dealing with cases of battered women and says it is her passion to be of help in the recovery process of these women. Maggie has participated in several forums and workshops aimed at sensitizing the public against gender violence. She offers psychological support to the victims at the recovery center. Women battery has detrimental effects which may, in turn, affect the family wholly.
Women battery is a form of gender-based violence. Maggie states that most of the victims she has helped are victims of domestic violence with physical and also emotional injuries inflicted on them. The recovery center provides psychological support and free medical care to the victims. Domestic violence poses a significant health risk especially when the victim is an expectant woman. Women who are pregnant get complications resulting in the death of the fetus, preterm labor, and other pregnancy related issues as a result of the violence. Physical injuries that the victims sustain cause health difficulties such as heart diseases and hypertension in their old age. The psychological effects of this vice are depression and posttraumatic stress disorder which is brought about by anxiety, intrusive imagery, nightmares, and flashbacks. Domestic violence has an adverse impact on the children which results in psychosomatic disorders. The male children who witness battery on their mothers are likely to be violent when they grow up. Battered women have low self-esteem and suffer from inferiority complex.
Individuals can successfully avoid being victims of domestic violence by looking out for the behavior of their spouses. If a husband is insensitive, possessive and has a sudden change of personality, then one should take this as a warning sign.
