WOMEN IN AGE OF ENLIGHTENMENT
Questions into women development marked the age. Mary Wollstonecraft, Rousseau and Perry all had different opinions on women. In the 18th century, women got belittled. They would provide support to their husbands and be tutors to their sons. Their views were not considered (Griswold 9). The perceptions were different from different authors. Women can make the world a better place if empowered.
Historical context
The government at the time did not empower women and even changed words in the constitution from "person" to "man." It showed the extent to which gender equality was at its lowest. Rousseau greatly influenced Wollstonecraft intellectually. In 1787 she was working in Dublin as a governess, and it was then that she read Emile, Rousseau's works. She was an exciting admirer and criticizer who would often cite Rousseau's work. In the 18th century, women had no status. Wives were their husband’s properties. Women were considered irrelevant outside their homes (Halldenius 8). Rousseau wrote on the current situation then while Wollstonecraft was open-minded in the female perspective on all that was ongoing concerning gender equality.
