Chicana and Asian American Feminisms
Women of color experienced similar and varying social, racial, economic, and political conditions that led them to establish feminist movements in America, which were different from mainstream feminism.
Chicanas and Asian American women suffered the same social conditions, including racial and sexist oppressions (Garcia 219). Chicanas developed their feminist consciousness from the mass revolutions witnessed during the Civil Rights movement. Chicana women began to re-evaluate their role in society as well as that of society following the nationalist Chicana movements (Garcia 219). Asian American women also began developing the feminist consciousness following the civil rights revolution. Both movements also relied on the family as a tactical organizational tool for awareness (Garcia 219). However, Asian American women began to form women’s groups after witnessing similar movements among Hispanic and Black women (Chow 287). Therefore, Chicana and Asian American women developed the feminist perception by working with nationalist movements to end racial and ethnic oppression through the civil rights movement. Nevertheless, Asian American women suffered sexism based on the cultural roles of Asian communities (Chow 287). Chicana did not suffer much criticism, especially from male counterparts in their struggle towards feminist realization.
