Discrimination and Racial Profiling in Law Enforcement
Over the years, the issue of racial-based treatment of blacks by law enforcers has come into sharp focus worldwide. As a problem highly prevalent in the United States, racial discrimination and profiling have made headlines for long, and it seems challenging to control. At a glance, there is nothing beneficial that comes from perceiving and treating people while using their race as the point of reference. Due to its detrimental effects, this habit is bad: it causes unfair targeting of the minority groups, damages the relationship between people and law enforcers, increases criminal activity, and can make people victims of harsh sentencing and incarceration.
As a persistent problem, it is vital first to assess what racial discrimination and profiling entail. In practice, discrimination involves the unfair treatment of a person based on some characteristics. In most cases, these features are natural, and that is how race becomes a point of reference. On the other hand, racial profiling is the presumption race will affect how a person does something. In law enforcement, this profiling comes in light of an actuarial method of crime analysis and control that connects criminal behavior with race, nationality, and sometimes religion (Press 165). Inevitably, there is a wrong perception of people and what leads to how they behave. Unfortunately, the behavior has increasingly become a part of law enforcement.
