Why Should I be a Leader?
It is a question I find myself asking now and then. Being a leader always comes with a set of challenges and added responsibilities. After all, we all have things that we are responsible for in our life. Whether it is parenthood responsibilities, paying rent or mortgage, school homework, grocery bills, or job responsibilities, all these are responsibilities you have to carry on with even as a leader. When a person becomes a leader, added responsibilities come about. With that stress and pressure, more hours are needed to get things done. So who is a leader, and why would someone want to become one? Bennis and Townsend (pg. 89) argue that, a leader is a person who guides others toward a common goal, creating an enabling environment for everyone in a team and showing the way by example (Bennis & Townsend pg.12). Leaders are not the boss but, instead, a person dedicated to carrying out the mission of the team. Leaders are an escort and inspiration for others in a team.
Taking some steps back in my life, I have seen myself placed in various leadership roles. On the contrary; I did not want to take on the leadership role in most of these times, but I always knew that if I did not take that role something I believed needed to be done would not be done. That is probably one of the reasons people take on the role of a leader. Your own convictions and beliefs can make you see the importance of taking on a leadership role.
