Cloud computing is one of the greatest inventions of the 21st century. It enables sharing of computer resources which one can access on-demand. The resources vary from servers, storage, networks, applications and services among others over the internet operating on a pay-for-use service basis just like other utilities. Advocates and those against it continue to put forth arguments in support of the stands.
One of the notable advantages of using cloud computing for ICT disaster recovery is that it is cheaper and easier (Henley 17). One is able to recover lost data within a short period of time at costs that about ten times lower than in the case of the traditional means associated with hard-drive storage. The second advantage is an increase in collaboration and flexibility. It provides for more opportunities for employees and business to interact. Employees are able to sync documents and work on shared applications easily. Another merit is that it is environmentally friendly as it cut’s down significantly on a company’s carbon footprint.
The cons of utilising cloud computing include the need for consistent internet connectivity, ongoing costs and security threats among others (Henley 23). In case any of the providers of cloud-based services loses connectivity, a business may be forced out of business until the connection is restored. The costs of maintaining the cloud-based services are continuous as one has to pay certain amounts of money to the service provider at specified intervals.
