Personal statement
I was eleven when my family and I moved to United States. After a month, my father moved to different states to find work. My mother was working long hours every day and taking care of my siblings and me. I still remember late night phone conversations my parents would have that would leave both of them in tears. I recognize this moment as the epiphany of the struggle of many new immigrants. It was then; I decided to take the load off my mother. I would attend my siblings’ parent teacher conferences, events, and activities in school while paying phone bills, rent, cooking, and interpreting for my mother. All throughout, my parents would daily remind me of their struggle to adapt and give us better life filled with opportunities, one they did not have. They would preach day and night about the power of education and how it can change the way we live and exist. My efforts bore fruit when I was introduced to the model minority myth at my school. Through hard work my counselors, teachers, and peers repeatedly reminded me that I had to be the smartest even though I was an ESL student who was not the best student.
I studied rigorously, hard and smart. This went on till my high school. But when I was applying for colleges, I realized despite my efforts, I still lacked resources and scholarships that my white peers had access to. My siblings would be attending colleges soon after me and the lack of programing and mentorship available made me question what my parents’ thought of "land of equal opportunities." As the first born and first-generation student in the family, I knew my actions would reflect and impact on my siblings. I wanted to work towards creating equity and educational access for all irrespective of income generation, social or cultural background. My academic goals categorically correspond with expanding resources, support and services for my personal success and the success of students in regards to the socio emotional well-being that ultimately leads to academic stardom in the education field. Through this, I will be able to identify with students, colleagues and the society at large from a wide array of cultural background Nevertheless my career goal focuses on expanding financial aid to the minority within the community so that resources available are and can be channeled to their direction to expound on the great brains the minority can share with the rest of the world in terms of expertize. Equity in higher education is a requisite need especially in the higher education. The role played by the high education and student affairs practitioners in addressing inequity and social justice through mitigating gender disparities and working in solidarity to form strong movements for social justice is part and parcel of who I am in curbing social justice in the higher education through my professional goals on expanding fin...
